Women's basketball ends season at regionals in first round


                CASPER, Wyo. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team saw their season come to an end after dropping a 67-59 contest to Central Wyoming College in the first round of the Region IX Tournament in Casper, Wyo., Saturday afternoon.
                The Cougar women played well in the second half in leading the Rustlers 31-28 at the break, but the Central Wyoming crew opened up the second quarter with a 15-4 run.
                The Cougars were rebounded 36-25 and struggled from the 3-point area, only making 2 of 18 shots. CWC, on the other hand, converted on four treys and were 28 of 58 from the field.
                The Cougars did slice the lead to six points on a couple of occasions in the second half, but each time the Rustlers had an answer.
                WNCC had four players finish in double figures, led by Samantha Sanders with 16 points. Sanders, the sophomore from Denver, also had five assists, nine rebounds, and was 6 of 6 from the free throw line.
                Also hitting double digits was Kesley Doddridge with 11points, and Leona Garrett and Jessica Aratani with 1o points.
                The Cougars finish the season at 21-9. Central Wyoming advances to the quarterfinals to play Sheridan College on Sunday.
                In other scores from the tournament on Saturday, Gillette College defeated McCook 53-40, Western Wyoming dropped Lamar 88-48, and Miles Community College 67-60 over Northeast Nebraska.
                Sunday’s quarterfinals will have Otero facing Gillette at 1 p.m., Central Wyoming meeting Sheridan at 3 p.m., Northeastern Colorado taking on Western Wyoming at 5 p.m. and Casper College meeting Miles at 7 p.m.
