Baseball drops two in Arizona Tourney on March 14

PHOENIX, Ariz. -- The Western Nebraska Community College baseball dropped two contests in the South Mountain tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., on Wednesday.
In the opener, Chandler-Gilbert Community Scratched across a run in the bottom of the ninth inning to earn a hard-fought 4-3 win. The second game saw South Mountain Community College pound out xx hits in registering the 10-2 win.
WNCC coach Mike Jones said the first game was well played all the way around despite falling on the scoreboard.
"We played really well. Terry McNabb threw an outstanding game and all the way throughout the game, we played good defense, had solid pitching," he said. "Offensively we came up with some really big hits. Our at bats all the way through the game were good at bats, even though they caught it or whatever, we hit the ball hard and was disciplined at the plate. We really made progress."
The first game was a humdinger as both teams kept the pressure on the defenses. Chandler-Gilbert scored the first run in the third inning only to see the Cougars knot the contest in the fourth with as Jake Vore tripled and scored on a Oscar Familia grounder to shortstop.
Chandler-Gilbert retook the lead with two runs in the sixth inning. WNCC came back with some late-game heroics, scoring twice in the eighth with two outs. Vore singled in Pep Gonzalez to cut the lead to 3-2 and then Keaton Krause singled to score Nick Vanthillo to tie the game. WNCC had an opportunity to score more runs that inning, but left runners in scoring position.
Chandler-Gilbert then scored the winning run on an error with two outs to get the win.
WNCC pounded out 10 hits in the contest. Krause led the way with a 3-for-4 game with a RBI, while Andy Padron and Jake Vore each had two hits. Padron and Krause had the only extra base hits with doubles.
Terry McNabb started the game and pitched seven strong innings in giving up three runs, nine hits and striking out five. Brett McPhail took the loss, tossing the final two innings in giving up one run, one hit, walking three and striking out 1.
In the second contest, South Mountain scored five first-inning runs and coasted to the 10-2 win. South Mountain held a 7-0 lead after two innings. WNCC made a fight in the fourth, scoring twice on Vore's 2-run home run to rightfield.
That was all of WNCC's run-support as South Mountain scored three more times in the sixth for the 10-2 win.
Chalis Wright was saddled with the loss in giving up seven runs on seven hits in just one inning of work. Zak Porter then tossed five innings in allowing three runs on five hits and one strikeout. Chris Nadon also saw action in throwing two innings and allowing three hits.
The Cougars managed seven hits in the 9-inning contest. Tre Meier led the way with a 2-for-3 game, including a double. Vore had the other extra base hit for the Cougars with the home run.
WNCC will continue it's Spring Break play Thursday with two more games. They will face Division II, No. 5 Scottsdale Community College at 11 a.m. and then Division I, No. 19 Yavapai College at 3 p.m.
Jones said Jeff Schmitt will start the first contest and Trevor Kriesel the second game.
"Both of Thursday's opponents are winning games. From talking to coaches today, we know a little bit about both teams," Jones said. "They are going to be strong offensive ball clubs, have good pitching, and play pretty good defense. We will play our game and we will have our hands full."
