First round of men's regional tournament complete

The first round of the men’s Region IX tournament is complete after four more reams captured wins on Saturday.
The Eastern Wyoming College Lancers opened the day against Sheridan College and despite a 25-point effort from Ryan Wilson, the Lancers came up short to the Generals, falling 76-72 in a game that went down to the final minute.
In other first round contests on Sunday, Western Wyoming converted eight 3-pointers in ousting Laramie County 81-69, while Northeastern Junior College came back from a second half deficit to sting Central Wyoming 74-69. The nightcap saw North Platte comeback from a 31-24 halftime deficit to defeat Northwest College 67-63.
Sunday’s quarterfinals will have Otero facing Sheridan at 1 p.m., Miles Community College meeting Western Wyoming at 3 p.m., Casper taking on Northeastern Colorado at 6 p.m. and Western Nebraska Community College taking on North Platte at 8 p.m. Also, during halftime of the WNCC men’s contest, the state champion Scottsbluff boys basketball team will be recognized.
The winners advance to the semifinals on Monday at 6 and 8 p.m. with the championship game on Tuesday.
The Sheridan and Eastern Wyoming contest was a battle all night. The two teams hooked up in a one-point Sheridan win a week ago in both team’s regular season finale and Saturday it was the same kind of heated contest.
The Generals bolted to a 37-30 halftime lead and led around the double digit mark a couple times in the second half. But, the Lancers had plenty of fight as they battled back to take a couple late leads on a clutch bucket by Jarett Upchurch to give the Lancers a lead late.
Also coming up with some big baskets late was Ryan Wilson with a huge 3-pointer and Matt Rosenbaum.
The Lancers shot 50 percent from the field for the game and connected on nine 3-pointers while shooting 19 of 23 from the free throw line. Sheridan was even hotter from the field, making 56 percent of their shots and connecting on eight 3-pointers.
The difference in the game was rebounding, where the Generals out-rebounded the Lancers 34-14. EWC was led on the boards by Prescott Williams with four rebounds, while Khion Sankey and Ron Mvouika each had seven for the Generals.
Four Lancers finished with double figures. Wilson led the way with 25 points, including sinking six 3-pointers. Rosenbaum and Upchurch each had 14 points, while Williams had 12 points.
