WNCC softball team drops three games in Central Arizona tourney on March 16


                COOLIDGE, Ariz. -- The Western Nebraska Community College softball team dropped three games on Friday at the Central Arizona tournament.
                The Cougars received a stellar pitching performance from Bianca Duran against Arizona Western College, but ended up falling 2-1. The Cougars also dropped a 13-3 contest to Scottsdale Community College and then fell 9-1 to Howard College.
                The Arizona Western game went down to the wire. Duran suffered the loss but did everything she could to keep the Cougars in the contest. The freshman right hander tossed six innings in scattering nine hits and allowing just two runs and one earned run. She struck out two and did not walk a batter.
                Arizona Western scored their runs early, going up 1-0 in the first inning and then pushing the lead to 2-0 after three.
                WNCC sliced the lead in half in the fourth. Kasey Cash started the contest with a double to left field and scored on a Mariah Shepherd 2-out single. The Cougars tried a late run in the seventh as Shepherd singled to start the inning before Bree Bitton earned a 2-out walk but the runners were stranded to end the game.
                WNCC managed just four hits in the contest. Shepherd led the way with two hits and an RBI, while Cash and Sarah Hawryluk had the other hits.
                In the team's opening game of the day against Scottsdale, the Cougars started strong, only trailing Scottsdale 3-1 after two innings. Scottsdale, however, opened up the game wiht 10 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to earn the win.
                WNCC scored a single run in the first as Hawryluk earned a lead-off walk and scored on a 2-out single by Duran. The Cougars didn't score again until the fifth when they plated two runs to cut the deficit in half a again at 6-3. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run home run by Kimmie Widick.
                Scottsdale only out-hit the Cougars 7-5, but the difference in the contest was five fielding errors. Widick led the team with a 1-for-2 game with two RBIs, a run scored and a home run. Also collecting singles in the game was Hawryluk, Duran, Danielle Hearn, and Kayla Romey.
                Amanda Jones took the loss in the circle, going 3 1/3 innings in allowing five runs on three hits and two walks. Jones allowed just one earned run. Aria Agle tossed 2 2/3 innings giving up eight runs on four hits.
                The Cougars wrapped up the day with a loss to Howard College 9-1, where the Cougars managed just two hits. WNCC took the lead against Howard in the third inning as Danielle Hearn and Duran worked 2-out walks. Hearn then came around to score on a Jocelyn Stubbs single  for the 1-0 lead.
                Howard came back to tie the game with a solo home run by Olive Naotala. Howard broke the game open in the fourth, plating eight runs on seven hits. The big blow was a 3-run home run by Taylor Johnson.
                Duran took the loss in the circle tossing 4 1/3 innings in giving up nine runs on eight hits. All the damage came in the fourth and fifth inning as Duran was perfect in the first three innings.
                WNCC will wrap up the tournament with two games on Saturday when they face Odessa at 11 a.m. and then El Paso Community College at 1 p.m. After that, they return to Region IX play when they travel to McCook on Wednesday before hosting Trinidad State on Thursday.
