MCCOOK -- Bianca Duran smashed three home runs and had five RBIS to lead the Western Nebraska Community College to two conference wins over McCook Community College Wednesday afternoon in McCook.
Duran had one home run and pitched the Cougars to a 13-1 win in the opener. Duran than exploded for two home runs and three RBIs in leading WNCC to a 14-5 in game two. Duran now has eight home runs and 32 RBIs on the season.
The two games were never in doubt as the Cougars opened each game with big first innings.
WNCC scored four times in the first inning and seven times in the second inning to take an 11-1 in the first game. Bree Bitton had the big hit in the first inning with a run-scoring double.
The second inning saw Gabi Palacios start things with a double, followed by a single by Hawryluk. After Palacios scored on a sacrifice fly, Duran pounded a two-run home run over leftfield.
WNCC put the game away with two runs in the third as Duran singled and scored on a Mariah Shepherd hit. Joclyn Stubbs later scored on a Bitton grounder.
WNCC pounded out 12 hits, including three doubles and a home run. Leading the hitting attack was Duran with two hits, including a home run, two runs scored and two RBIs. Bitton also collected two hits, including three RBIs and two runs scored, while Sarah Hawryluk had two hits, two stolen bases, a run scored and a RBI. Shepherd had just one hit, but had two runs scored and two RBIs.
The second game saw the Cougars plate four runs in the first before watching McCook slice the lead in half at 4-2 after three innings. That was when the Cougars opened up the game, plating five runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.
Duran got the offense started in the fourth with a solo shot to centerfield. WNCC then loaded the bases and Aria Agle delivered a a double to score three runs. Kimmie Widick then singled in Agle to put WNCC up 9-2.
McCook scored three times in the bottom of the fourth to slice the deficit to 9-5, but it was short lived as WNCC added another five runs on the fifth. Once again, Duran started the offense with another solo home run to right field followed by Mariah Shepherd delivering a solo shot to leftfield.
The Cougars connected for 17 hits including four extra base hits. Widick led the attack by going 3-f0r-4 with three RBIs. Kayla Romey also collected three hits on five at bats, while Agle went 3-for-4 with four RBIs, two runs scored and a double.
Also collecting multiple hits was Duran by going 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, Kasey Cash with two hits, two runs scored and a RBI, while Mariah Faifer was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI. Shepherd also had a good game, collecting a home run and three runs scored.
Amanda Jones picked up the win in the circle, going five innings in scattering nine hits, walking two and striking out four.
WNCC, 16-14, will be back in action today when they host Trinidad State Junior College in a Region IX conference doubleheader at Volunteer Field. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
