GREAT BEND, Kan. -- The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team had plenty of offense but so did Barton Community College as the Cougars dropped a doubleheader on Saturday 14-9 and 11-4.
The Cougars erupted for nine runs on 12 hits in the opener, but they had to do it by clawing back to make a game of it, after trailing 5-0 after one inning. WNCC did just that as they scored a single run in the second, three more in the third and two in the fourth to tie the game at 6-6.
Barton came back with four runs each in the fourth and fifth inning to take a 15-7 lead. WNCC tried to come back, scoring twice in the sixth, but it wasn't enough.
Max Brennan paced the Cougars with a 3-for-5 game, including an RBI and a run scored. Also collecting multiple hits were Nick Vanthillo and Benly Ramos. Vanthillo went 2-for-5 with a run scored and RBI. He also had a triple. Ramos went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run scored, and a double. The only other extra base hit was a double by Josh Bride.
Challis Wright took the loss on the mound, going four innings in allowing 10 runs on 11 hits while striking out just two. Tre Meier finished the game, going two innings and allowing four runs on four hits.
In the second game, the Cougars Jake Vore had a 2-hit game, but it wasn't enough as the Cougars managed just seven hits compared to Barton's 13.
WNCC, still had the game in hand. Barton scored the opening run for a 1-0 lead. It stayed that way until WNCC exploded for four runs in the fifth. The comeback started when Andy Padron singled followed by a Bride single. Jose Gonzalez then laced a double to centerfield to score the first run. Bride later scored on a passed ball to put the Cougars in front 2-1.
The Cougars weren't finished as Vore smashed a double to right field to score Gonzalez and Brennan for the 5-1 lead.
Barton bounced back in the bottom of the fifth with five runs on six hits. The Barton Cougars then added another five runs in the sixth inning on seven singles to take the 11-4 lead.
Vore and Bride were the only Cougars with two hits each. Vore was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double, while Bride was 2-for-3 with a run scored from his lead-off position. Brennan also chipped in with three stolen bases and two walks.
Giafranco Bemal took the loss in going five innings and allowing seven hits, eight runs while striking out four. Zak Porter finished off the game with one inning of work.
The Cougars, 3-5, will be back in action Sunday when they face Barton in a 9-inning game. WNCC will then return home on Thursday when they host Colorado State before beginning Empire Conference action next weekend at home against Trinidad State Junior College.
