Cougar baseball team drops contests to ranked teams on March 15

PHOENIX — The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team dropped a pair of contests to ranked teams during the South Mountain Tournament on Thursday in Phoenix.
Despite an outstanding pitching performance by sophomore Jeff Schmitt, the Cougars dropped a tough 1-0 setback to No. 5 (Division II) Scottsdale Community College.
In its second game of the day, WNCC dropped an 11-1 decision to No. 19 (Division I) Yavapai College.
In the opener, Schmitt allowed just three hits and struck out five in seven strong innings on the mound. However, the WNCC offense gave Schmitt little support in the nine-inning contest.
The lone run of the game was scored in the seventh inning.
Brett McPhail tossed the last inning for WNCC and retired the side in order.
WNCC had a number of opportunities to score runs in the early innings, especially the fourth when Jake Vore reached base on an error. That was followed by a double by Oscar Familia. But Vore was then thrown out at home trying to score on a double-play ground ball.
In the seventh, WNCC’s Andy Padron hit a two-out triple but was stranded at third.
WNCC out-hit Scottsdale in the game, 6-3. Familia and Max Brennen led the way with two hits each.
Against Yavapai, WNCC trailed only 3-1 through five innings. However, Yavapai exploded for seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings to pull away for the 10-run win.
Trailing 3-0 through three innings, WNCC plated its lone run in the fourth when Brennen, Vore and Familia hit three straight singles. Brennen scored on Familia’s single. The Cougars then loaded the bases with just one out, but couldn’t scratch across any more runs.
WNCC totaled six hits in the contest. Brennen and Familia each had two hits. Benly Ramos added a double.
Trevor Kriesel tossed five strong innings before being relieved in the sixth by Tre Meier and Dalton Goings. Kriesel gave up seven runs on 10 hits, while striking out four. Meier allowed two runs on two hits and struck out one in one inning, while Goings gave up two runs in one-third of an inning.
WNCC will take on Cochise College today at 3 p.m. before wrapping up its spring break trip with one game on Saturday.
