FT. COLLINS, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team gave up five eighth inning runs to fall to the Colorado State University Club team 9-5 Tuesday afternoon in Ft. Collins, Colo.
WNCC, who won four straight contests over the weekend, started the contest strong, scoring three first-inning runs as Benly Ramos had a double that scored two runs for the 3-0 lead.
WNCC went up 4-0 with a single run in the third as Ramos smashed a solo home run to left field.
CSC battled back, slicing the deficit in half at 4-2 with two runs in the fourth before WNCC added a run in the fifth to go up 5-3.
The Rams trailed 5-4 after scoring single runs in the fifth and sixth before giving up five runs in the eighth inning on four hits, including three doubles to fall behind 9-5.
The Cougars received some strong outings on the mound in the contest early on. Terry McNabb threw well, going three innings in allowing just one hit and striking out one. After McNabb’s outing, WNCC coach Mike Jones threw one pitcher an inning.
Challis Wright gave up two runs on two hits while striking out two. Dalton Goings also struck out two in allowing three hits and only one run. Zak Porter, however, is saddled with the loss as he went two-thirds of an inning in allowing three hits, four runs with one strike out.
Offensively, The Cougars had eight hits. Vore and Ramos each collected two hits. Vore was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a double, and a run scored; while Ramos was 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and three RBIs.
The Cougars will next be in action Friday and Saturday when they face Lamar Community College on Friday and Saturday in Region IX Empire Conference games, followed by a conference game at Otero Junior College on Sunday. After that, WNCC will take part in contests in Arizona over Spring Break.
