WNCC softball splits with Lamar on Feb. 25

LAMAR, Colo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College softball team split a conference doubleheader against Lamar Community College on Saturday.
In the opener, Bianca Duran shut out the Runnin' Lopes as she scattered six hits and striking out xx batters in posting a 7-0 win. The second game saw the Cougars battle back from a 6-2 deficit before falling 7-6 in nine innings.
In the opener, the Cougars pounded out six hits but they got the hits at clutch times. The Cougars scored twice in the opening inning on two hits a single by Gabi Palacios and a run-scoring single by Mariah Shepherd.
WNCC added an insurance run in the fifth before opening up the game with four runs in the seventh. The big blow was a Danielle Hearn 2-run home run and a double by Shepherd that plated two.
The Cougars had just three players record a hit in the contest. Palacios led the way with a 3-for-4 game including two runs scored, a RBI, and two stolen bases. Shepherd also finished with two hits, including a double, three RBIs, and a stolen base. The only other hit was Hearn's home run. Sarah Hawryluk also had three runs scored and two stolen bases.
Duran was simply marvelous in the circle by pitching the complete game, while striking out four and walking just two.
The Cougars started slow in the second game but made a strong comeback late.  Lamar took an early 6-0 lead by scoring two runs each in the second, third and fourth innings. WNCC finally cracked the scoreboard with two runs in the fifth. The rally all started when Hawryluk scored Hearn with a triple to centerfield. A couple batters later, Hawryluk  scored on a Shepherd sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 6-2.
WNCC tied the game in the seventh inning on five hits. The magical seventh started as Hawryluk and Palacios recorded back-to-back singles. Hawryluk and Palacios later scored to cut the lead to 6-4. Later, Duran scored on a Jocelyn Stubbs gound out and then Shepherd scored the tying run on a Kasey Cash single forcing extra innings.
Lamar had opportunities to win the game in the seventh and eighth innings, but left base runners stranded. In the eight, Jones pitched out of a bases loaded, one-out jam to induce a groundout and a fly ball to force a ninth inning.
Lamar finally won the game in the night as two singles and an error loaded the bases and then the winning run was scored on a no-out sacrifice fly.
WNCC managed seven hits in the contest as Hawryluk went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, a triple, and a RBI. Shepherd finished with just one hit, but had two RBIs.
Jones had a complete game in going 8 1/3 innings in allowing 17 hits, seven runs and striking out one. Jones threw 142 pitches, 91 for strikes, and had 27 first-pitch strikes in the 45 batters that she faced.
The Cougars, 4-5, will be back in action Sunday when they travel to face Trinidad State Junior College in a conference doubleheader.
