WNCC men defeat EWC


               (From Feb. 20)  TORRINGTON, Wyo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College men's basketball team made the game interesting down the stretch, but a clutch rebound by Alliance's Mike Peltz secured Eastern Wyoming College's furious comeback attempt in posting an 80-77 sub-region win Wednesday night in Torrington, wyo.
                WNCC coach Russ Beck said this was a typical WNCC and EWC contest where no lead was safe.
                "This was a great game. It was a typical finish with it coming down to the wire," he said. "I am proud of our guys and EWC played there guts out. It was a great game."
                The Cougars led by as much as 15 points for the majority of the second half, including a 76-61 lead with five minutes to play. That was when the Lancers picked up the defense and made a strong charge in upsetting the 21-5 Cougars.
                The Lancers, in their comeback, buried two clutch 3-pointers by Ryan Wilson and Matt Rosenbaum. to outscore the Cougars 18-4 in the final five minutes. The Lancers cut the lead to just two points, 79-77, on a Rosenbaum bucket with 50 seconds to play. WNCC then turned the ball over with 18.4 seconds and the Lancers worked for the game-winning shot.
                After a timeout, Rosenbaum attempted a 3-pointer but it bounced off and Peltz hauled down the rebound and was fouled. The Alliance product nailed one of two free throws to push the lead back to three points with 3.7 seconds and the Lancers didn't get a good look at a shot to fall.
                The contest was a shooting explosion on both sides. EWC led just once in the contest at 3-2. After that, WNCC ran off 13 straight points to take a 15-2 lead. The Lancers sliced the lead to 30-24 on a Wilson bucket, but Peltz and Raul Delgado buried back-to-back treys and Sebastian Suarez stole the ball and slammed home the points to help WNCC lead at halftime 39-29.
                In the second half, WNCC led by 20 points, 62-42, with 11:40 to play as the inside game was effective, including a dunk by Marko Kovacevic and two dunks by Du'Vaughn Maxwell.. WNCC led 76-61 after a Suarez trey and two free throws by Terrance Motley before EWC started their comeback.
                WNCC shot 51 percent from the field and were 6 of 16 from the 3-point area. They were also 20 of 30 from the free throw line. EWC shot 41 percent from the field and they buried 12 of 31 3-pointers. The Lancers were just 15 of 20 from the free throw line.
                WNCC had four players hit for double figures. Maxwell led the way with 21 points followed by Delgado with 18, Motley with 13, ad Suarez with 12.
                The Lancers were led by Rosenbaum's 28 points and nine rebounds, while Wilson had 15 pionts on five 3-pointers.
                EWC will next be in action Friday when they host McCook. WNCC will next be in action Saturday afternoon when they host McCook in the last regular season contest. The women's game begins at 12 noon followed by the men's. Also, the college will recognize the sophomores on both the men's and women's teams as well as the dorm parents.
