WNCC women's basketball falls to CNCC in overtime

COLBY, Kan. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team came up short against Colorado Northwestern Community College Thursday in the first day of the Colby Classic.
The Cougar women made just 9 of 19 free throws and missed two game-winning shots in the final seconds of regulation in falling 57-56 in overtime to the Spartans.
WNCC coach Dave Harnish said this is a tough loss to take.
“It is a disappointing loss,” he said. “We can’t make free throws. We are not focused enough to  do the little things well. We didn’t play that well in North Dakota and we didn’t play that well today. For some reason we are making defensive mistakes, can’t get in a rhythm offensively, we turn the ball over too much, and we can’t make free throws. All those things are coming back to bite us.”
The Cougars held a 26-24 lead at intermission and had plenty of opportunities to win the game, not only in regulation, but also overtime.
“We were up four late in regulation we missed some shots from about 10 feet from the basket to give us a chance to win the game,” Harnish said. “Then, in overtime, we lost the game on a lay-up with four seconds left.”
WNCC finished the contest committing 25 turnovers and shot just 42 percent from the charity stripe.
The Cougars had two players finish with double-digit scoring. Kyra Peterson led the way with 16 points followed by Samantha Sanders with 10 points. Also for the Cougars, Jessica Aratani finished with eight points and seven rebounds while Kelsey Doddridge had seven points and seven rebounds.
WNCC will have little time to drawl on the loss as they play Colby Community College on Friday before taking on Hastings College junior varsity on Saturday.
