WNCC women power past Williston State to open season

WILLISTON, N.D. – Kyra Peterson poured in 20 points and the Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team opened its season with a 79-74 win over Williston State College Friday at Williston, N.D.
WNCC coach Dave Harnish said he was pleased to get the win, but not how his team finished the contest.
“It is nice to get a win but I am disappointed of how we finished,” he said. “We were up by 20 points at 69-49 and let things get out of hand. We turned the ball over and missed free throws. They cut the lead to three with 30 seconds to go. But, we hung on and got the win.”
The Cougars held a slim 36-33 lead at intermission.
Harnish said his team shot the ball well from the 3-point line, making 42 percent of their shots. Peterson paced the team with three treys, while freshman Melike Yalcinkaya had two 3-pointers to go with her 11 points. The Cougars also shot 25 of 41 from the free throw line.
Samantha Sanders also chipped in 17 points while ChaCha Ofoegbu with nine points and seven rebounds.
