NJC moves into winner's bracket final with win over Trinidad at regionals


                Northeastern Junior College’s Mayara Prestes finished with a double-double and the Plainswomen moved into the winner’s bracket finals of the Region IX South Volleyball Tournament at Western Nebraska Community College’s Cougar Palace with a 25-20, 25-25-17, 25-16 win over Trinidad State Junior College Friday morning.
                Prestes, a freshman from Brazil, tallied 11 kills and 13 digs in the win. Freshman Mackenzie Krause led the team in kills, smacking down 12 kills while also finishing with nine digs. Nikki Schmidt also tallied 11 kills and eight digs.
                Also for the Plainswomen, Morgan Woodruff finished with six kills and five digs, while Mandi Velasquez had five digs and 41 set assists.
                For the Trojans, they were led by Jacinta Hoffpauir with five kills while Kaylee Johnson had four kills and three points. Alyssa Hernandez tossed in just three kills for the Trojans.
                The contest was a matter of small runs for the Plainswomen, which opened up a close contest. In the first set, NJC used a 2-point runs by Prestes and Woodruff to move to a 16-10 lead. NJC pushed the lead to 22-14 on two Kirsten Schumacher points and won the set on a Krause kill.
                The second set was close until Prestes hit a kill and Velasquez had to service points to push the lead to 12-8. Trinidad cut the lead to 16-14 and later 17-15 on a Johnson kill, but Prestes had a kill and then two service points to push the lead to 21-16. Krause finished off the set with a kill.
                The third set was close from the start until Woodruff served for three points and then Schumacher had another two points for a 15-8 lead. Once again, Krause had a hand in the final points, this time serving three points for the win.
                NJC moves into the winner’s bracket final today [Friday] at 5 p.m., while Trinidad faces McCook at 3 p.m. in an elimination contest.
