WNCC women top Hastings College J.V.

COLBY, Kan. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team put four players in double figures and continue playing strong defensively as they finished the Colby Classic with a decisive win over the Hastings College junior varsity team 76-40 Saturday afternoon.
Cougar sophomore Leona Garrett paced the Cougar attack with a season high 16 points followed by Kyra Peterson with 15 points. Also netting double digits were Jessica Aratani and Kelsey Doddridge with 13 points each.
WNCC coach Dave Harnish said the energy level continues to build on the court for the ladies.
“We shot the ball a lot better and we created more turnovers,” he said. “Our energy is a lot better on the floor.”
The Cougars, who fell to Colorado Northwestern in the first day of the Colby Classic, quickly put that loss behind them in the final two games of the classic. The Cougar defense held Colby Community College to just 41 points, 14 in the second half, and then stymied Hastings College to just 40 points, 18 in the second half.
Harnish said a big reason for the two huge wins after that defeat was because of the teams’ intensity on the court.
“Our energy level picked up and we have definitely played better,” he said. “We got better after that loss.”
Aratani paced the Cougars in rebounding with eight rebounds. Offensively, the Cougars nailed just four 3-pointers on nine attempts. Peterson buried two of the four treys.
WNCC, 4-1, will return to action on Thursday when they host Colorado Christian junior varsity at 6 p.m. at Cougar Place. That contest will be the start of four straight home contests. The Cougars will host Ft. Carson Army Base on Saturday at 2 p.m. followed by the Thanksgiving Classic with games on Thanksgiving night against Colorado Northwestern and Oglala Lakota on Nov. 25.
