WNCC women get defensive with big win over Colby 59-41

COLBY, Kan. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team got defensive Friday night against Colby Community College in the second day of the Colby Classic in racing to a 59-41 win.
The Cougars trailed 27-26 at halftime, but came out with plenty of defensive energy in allowing the Trojans just 14 second half points in collecting their third win of the season.
WNCC coach Dave Harnish was pleased with the way they played, especially in the second half when they put everything together.
“We played good defense and we definitely played better tonight [than Thursday night in the 57-56 loss,” he said. “We took care of the basketball and had 10 or 11 turnovers for the game. We also executed a lot better on offense and that is something we worked for.”
The Cougars still struggled shooting from the charity stripe and from beyond the arc. WNCC was 11 of 22 from the free throw line and 4 of 15 from the 3-point line. Kyra Peterson continues to have the hot hand, collecting three 3-pointers. Peterson, a sophomore from Lafayette, Colo., finished with 14 points to lead the Cougars.
The Cougars also got strong performances from a number of players. Morrill’s Jessica Aratani finished the contest with nine points and led the team with six rebounds. Leona Garrett also pitched in nine points, while Idil Ozbayrak and Kelsey Doddridge each had eight points.
WNCC, 3-1, will finish off the Colby Classic with an 11 a.m. contest against Hastings College junior varsity before they return home to face Colorado Christian junior varsity next Thursday at 6 p.m.
