WNCC women fall 3-0 in Region IX championship to LCCC

ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. -- Oct. 22, 2011 -- The Western Nebraska Community College women's soccer team played Laramie County Community College tough, but in the end the Golden Eagles were a slight touch better in downing WNCC 3-0 in the Region IX championship game at Rock Springs, Wyo., on Saturday.
WNCC coach Todd Rasnic said his team played well and they gave it their all.
"We played them pretty tough both halves," he said. "In the first half we brought some players up trying to get a goal on them and we held them down. They scored their first goal in the 43rd minute and then they didn't score until the 53rd minute."
LCCC, who has won three straight Region IX titles, now advances to the district playoffs in Kansas the first week in November.
The championship match was a battle between two of the top women's soccer programs in the region as both squads were locked up in a dandy of a defensive contest. Neither team found the net until with two minutes left in the half when LCCC's Vanessa Alexander found the back of the net for the 1-0 halftime lead.
LCCC added a second goal just nine minutes into the second half as Flor Veronica scored for a 2-0 lead. The Golden Eagles' final goal came in the 90th minute on a shot by Delyaliz Rosario Ambert.
LCCC outshot the Cougars 12-6. Bailey Wenz collected nine saves in net for the Cougars.
Rasnic said that they didn't get the breaks in the contest like they did in the semifinal contest against Northwest on Friday.
"They have been approving all season. They came out and showed well. We had a shot off the crossbar and the breaks just didn't go our way," he said. "We had two or three times we were behind their defense today, where yesterday we finished the ball well, today the luck didn't go our way."
Rasnic said his team had a good year as they continued getting stronger as the season went along. WNCC finished with a 6-7 record.
"They had a good season. They started off where we didn't have a lot of experience out there and they worked hard all year," he said. "They responded well to training and they went out and did what we asked them to do. They came very close to putting it all together here at the end. Overall, I thought the team did really well."
WNCC will lose eight sophomores in Kristi Blicharz, Fernanda Acorinte, Ashley Gleason, Rachelle Tekler, Quincey Jackson, Leti Lopez, Tiffany Snethen, and Brittany McNeil and they will be missed, but the Cougars will also be returning some talent with the freshmen. Rasnic said they will be OK next year.
"We know what we need to recruit for next year," Rasnic said. "I think you will see us come out with an improved squad next year again."
