The No. 2 Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team remained perfect at home as they swept through Casper College 25-15, 25-10, 25-15 Saturday night in the five sophomores final regular season home contest.
The five sophomores -- Dani Grace, Lais Soares, Debora Araujo, Fernanda Goncalves and Jodi Huddleston -- were honored before the contest and then the team went out and took care of business, going to 34-1 on the season with one regular season match left.
The contest was tight in the first set before the Cougars put together a late run led by timely kills from Araujo and a 5-point service run by Soares for the 25-15 win.
Set two was all Cougars as freshman Danika Youngblood opened up a tight contest with a 7-point run for a 16-5 lead. The Cougars cruised to the 25-10 win and the 2-0 match lead.
The third set saw the Cougars move out in front early and stayed there despite mini runs from Casper on getting the win.
Goncalves led the way with a triple double of 32 set assists, 10 points and 10 digs. She also pitched in two kills and four digs. Also for the Cougars, Soares finished with eight kils, four blocks, six digs, two aces and five points; Huddleston had nine kills and five blocks; Aruajo had 11 kills, five digs, two blocks, and two points; Youngblood had 12 digs, seven points, and thre kills; Alex Rivera had seven digs; Abbey Wade finished with six digs and two kills; Grace had three digs; and Taylor VanderWerff had three kills and three blocks.
WNCC will finish off the regular season portion of its schedule on Wednesday when they travel to Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo. After that they will host the Region IX South volleyball tournament Nov. 3-5.
