WILLISTON, N.D. – The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team received a double-double from DuVaughn Maxwell as the Cougars captured a win over Williston State College 82-76 in the season opener.
Maxwell poured in 24 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory. Maxwell was one of three Cougars to finish with double-digit scoring. Terrance Motley finished with 15 points, while Raul Delgado had 14 points.
WNCC coach Russ Beck said his team fought through the first game jitters. They did, however, sink some clutch buckets down the stretch to pull off the road win.
“We had some first game jitters but anytime you can go on the road and open with a win is pretty good,” he said. “I am happy to get the win. We had a lead and then we lost the lead going down by four and then we came back to get the win.”
Beck said the Cougars retook the lead late on a Delgado 3-pointer that he sank as the shot clock was running down from about six feet beyond the 3-point arc. Mason Smith also nailed a clutch 3-pointer late to preserve the six-point victory.
WNCC finished with six three-pointers in the contest as Delgado and Sabastian Suarez each had two.
Mike Peltz led the team with nine rebounds followed by Marko Kovacevic with seven, Smith with four and Allen Beck, Motley and Delgado with three boards each. Kovacevic also recorded three blocked shots in the contest, while Peltz had three assists.
WNCC, 1-0, will be back in action Saturday afternoon when they face Lake Region State College at Williston, N.D., before returning to host the WNCC Classic next weekend.
