WNCC softball falls twice at Columbus tourney

COLUMBUS -- The Western Nebraska Community College softball team finished the Jimmy Johns/Holiday Inn Express tournament in Columbus with two losses in the second day of the tournament on Sunday.
NO. 18 WNCC finished the tournament at 3-2, winning all three games on Saturday. Sunday was a different story. The Cougars lost a heartbreaker to Iowa Western Community College 3-2 to open the day before falling 8-0 to No. 14 NJCAA Division II ranked Kirkwood Community College.
WNCC had plenty of changes to win the opening contest against Iowa Western Community College. The Reivers grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning on three, 2-out singles. After that both pitchers settled down.
The Cougars took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Megan Bourdon started the rally with a single to center field. Jacqui Cappuccill followed with a 2-out home run to left field to put WNCC up 2-1.
Iowa Western came right back with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a 2-run home run.
WNCC had opportunities to tie the game in the last two innings, but couldn't get the clutch hit.
Both teams had eight hits in the contest. Sarah Hawryluk led the way with a 2-for-3 game with two stolen bases. Cappuccilli went 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs. Jordan Schoepflin, Jocelyn Stubbs, and Mariah Faifer all had doubles in the game.
Ashton Hughes took the loss in the circle, despite pitching well. Hughes went six innings, scattering eight hits and allowing three runs. She struck out seven and walked two.
WNCC couldn't get its offense untracked in the second game against Division II-ranked Kirkwood. In fact, Hawryluk had the only hit in the game, a one-out single in the first inning. After that Kirkwood's pitcher held WNCC in check.
Amanda Jones took the loss in the circle, allowing eight runs on 10 hits. Jones also struck out six in the contest.
WNCC, 31-10, will look to get back on the winning track when they host North Platte Community College on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Volunteer Field followed by a home Region IX contest against McCook on Wednesday.
