WNCC, Otero baseball split doubleheader on Sunday

LA JUNTA, Colo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team earned a split of Empire Conference games Sunday with Otero Junior College.
In the opener, the Cougars fell in heart-breaking fashion 4-3. WNCC, however, quickly put that one-run loss behind them and stormed to an 11-8 in the final game of the four-game weekend series.
WNCC pounded out 10 hits and ripping four extra base hits in grabbing the second game 11-8.
Otero struck first by scoring two runs in the third inning for a 2-0 lead. That was short lived as WNCC plated seven runs on six hits in the fourth inning for a 7-2 lead.
Paul Singh and Reiner Alamberry started the rally with lead off singles. Kevin Sanford then walked to load the bases. Two batters later, Jake Montoya belted a 3-run home run to left field to put WNCC up 4-2.
WNCC kept the offense clicking as Camilo Baldelomar had a run-scoring single and Singh had a double that scored to runs.
WNCC added a single run in the fifth as Sanford tripled and scored on a Jake Vore sacrifice fly.
The Cougars added three insurance runs in the seventh inning on three hits. Nelson Quintero had the big hit of the inning, getting a 2-run double.
Otero made a run in the seventh, scoring four times with two outs on four hits.
WNCC had a trio of players record more than one hit in the contest. Montoya led the way with a 2-for-3 contest with two runs scored, three RBIs and a home run. Singh went 2-for04 with a double, run scored and two RBIs, while Quintero went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, a run scored and a double.
Tim Beard picked up the win, going four innings and allowing five hits, three runs and striking out two. Trevor Kreisel finished off the game, tossing the final three innings. Kreisel scattered five hits and gave up five runs.
The first game just wasn't meant to be for the Cougars. WNCC managed just two hits in the contest, but had an opportunity to win. The difference was a walk-off seventh-inning home run.
WNCC held a 3-2 lead in the fifth inning as Montoya, Kreisel and Quintero earned free passes to load the bases. Baldelomar then scored two runs with a double to left field. Quintero and Baldelomar each were stranded in scoring position.
Otero came back to tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on a lead-off home run and then won the game in the seventh with another home run.
Baldelomar had the only two hits for the Cougars as the sophomore infielder went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.
Terry McNabb took the loss on the mound, tossing the final 1 1/3 innings. McNabb allowed just one hit and one run. Jeff Schmitt of Cheyenne, Wyo., started the contest, going five innings. Schmidtt scattered six hits, allowed three runs, walked two and struck out three.
WNCC, 11-19, will next be in action Tuesday when they travel to Ft.
