[March 14, 2013) Kasey
Cash smashed two home runs and the 13th-ranked Western Nebraska
Community College softball played solid defense in posting a doubleheader sweep
over Dawson Community College Thursday afternoon at Volunteer Field in
Scottsbluff.
In
the opener, the Cougars’ Bianca Duran and Ravae Herrera combined on a no-hitter
to lead the Cougars to the 6-0 win. The second game saw the Cougars pound out
xx hits, including a solo home run by Cash and a 3-run-scoring double by Angel
Council to win 12-4.
The two
wins push the Cougars record to 21-4 as they prepare for a 3-day road trip
beginning Saturday at Trinidad State Junior College.
Cash,
who had solo home runs in each game and pushed her total to 12 homers, said
they played much better today than they did against McCook on Wednesday.
“I
thought we played very well today,” Cash said. “I feel we came together as a
team. After yesterday’s [Wednesday] game with the rough start, we put it back
together and played hard today to get these two wins.”
The
Cougars did play well on both sides of the ball. Cash is the first to say that
this team has a potent offensive line-up and they play well defensively.
“I
think our offense is very good. We have a stacked lineup where throughout the
lineup we have so much power,” she said. “And, our defense is solid as well. We
all play defense very well and we don’t make many mistakes, and when we do, it
is very rare.”
The
first game was a pitcher’s dream as Buran and Herrera had the combined
no-hitter. The Buccaneers had base runners, but they were either by walks,
hit-batsman, or a fielder’s choice, or an error. Duran picked up the win gong
five innings in striking out five, while Herrera went two innings and struck
out three.
Offensively,
the Cougars pounded out nine hits, including a double by Danielle Hearn and a
solo home run by Cash. Hearn paced the Cougars from the plate with a 3-for-3
game, while Cash went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Kayla Romey also had a nice game,
picking up a single, scored two runs, and had two stolen bases.
WNCC
scored single runs in the first and third inning, but it was the second inning
where the Cougars opened up the contest, scoring four times. Cash led off the
second with a home run. That hit was followed a double by Hearn, followed by
singles by Haley Paxton, Romey, and Duran.
The
second game saw the Cougars smash 11 hits including six extra base hits.
WNCC
scored three times in the first off a lead-off single by Romey and then a
two-out triple by Cottle and a 2-out double by Mariah Shepherd. WNCC added four
more in the third on two hits for a 7-0 lead.
WNCC
added a single run in the fourth as Cash took a first pitch fastball and
delivered to dead centerfield, hitting the flag pole and American flag for her
12th dinger of the year. The Cougars led 8-1 at that point.
Dawson
came back and scored three times in the fifth with Bryce Mitchell towered a
3-run home run. The Cougars scored once more in the fifth and then put the game
away in the sixth with three runs including a double by Cash that scored Shelby
McGraw.
WNCC
had three players finish with multiple hits. Cash led the way with a 3-for-3
game, including finishing a single from hitting for the cycle. The sophomore
from Wellington, Colo., had three RBIs and three runs scored. Shepherd and
Duran each finished with two hits.
McGraw
picked up the win from the circle, tossing six innings in allowing seven hits,
four runs and striking out four.
The
Cougars will next be in action Saturday when they travel to Trinidad State
Junior College for two conference games. WNCC will then play Luna Community
College on Sunday and Adams State junior varsity on Monday before returning
home to face North Platte Community College on Wednesday.
