WNCC softball splits with Adams State

                [March 18, 2013] ALAMOSA, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College softball team split another doubleheader on Monday against Adams State junior varsity in Alamosa, Colo.

                The Cougars received another outstanding pitching performance from Bianca Duran who struck out eight and allowed two hits in game one to register the 3-1 win. Second game saw WNCC managed just three hits in getting beat 13-1.

                Duran picked up her fifth win in the last six days in controlling Adams State. Duran allowed just one unearned run in the win.

                Offensively, the Cougars pounded out seven hits, including two each from Duran and Jennifer Cottle.

                WNCC struck first, scoring a single run in the third as Danielle Hearn scored on a Duran single. Adams State came back to tie the game in the fourth with a run.

                WNCC took the lead for good in the sixth on three singles. Duran started things with her second hit of the game. Cottle then had her second hit of the game that scored Kasey Cash. Cottle came around to score on a Shelby McGraw single.

                The second game was tight for the first two innings until Adams State opened up the contest with a 5-run third innings. Adams State also plated eight runs in the fourth inning to put the game away. The big key in Adams State’s runs was six Cougar fielding errors.

                WNCC long run came in the fourth inning as Mariah Shepherd doubled in Kasey Cash for the lone run.

                The Cougars managed just three hits in the contest. Shepherd had a double and Cash and McGraw each had singles.

                Ravae Herrera picked up the loss in the circle, allowing 11 runs on 10 hits while giving up just four earned runs. McGraw finished off the game, tossing one inning in allowing two runs on one hit and striking out two. McGraw didn’t allow an earned run.

                WNCC, 24-7, is back in action Wednesday when they host North Platte Community College at Volunteer Field. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.
