WNCC sweeps Adams State junior varsity

               ALAMOSA, Colo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College softball pounded out 15 hits and tallied 24 runs in registering a doubleheader sweep over Adams State junior varsity Friday afternoon in Alamosa, Colo.
               The Cougars received a nine-strikeout performance from Ashton Hughes and Jocelyn Stubbs slammed a home run in powering the Cougars to a 10-2 win in the opening game. WNCC was even more impressive in game two, tallying 14 runs for a 14-6 victory to improve the Cougars to 9-4 on the season.

               WNCC coach Maria Winn-Ratliff said Hughes threw well and the team finally started to play Cougar ball in the fourth inning of the first game.
               "We showed a lot of discipline at the plate the second half of the first game and we played very good defense the first game," she said. "Ashton also pitched very well. She gave up a home run where she missed her spot and the kids just hit it. Other than that, she had nine strike outs and pitched well. We finally settled down and put runs up late in the game."
               Winn-Ratliff said that the second game they were very patient at the plate. They had 22 walks as a team in the doubleheader.
               "We had 22 walks on the day, so we were very patient at the plate after about the fourth inning of the first game," she said. "Finally, in the fourth inning of the first game we started to settle down and give ourselves opportunities and made their pitchers work extremely hard."
               In the opener, WNCC scored one run in the fourth and then followed with three runs each i the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. The fifth was a huge inning as the Cougars registered three runs on three hits. The big hits included a double by Allie Alverson and a 3-run home run by Stubbs.
               WNCC added another three runs on three hits in the sixth inning. Jacqui Cappuccilli had a run-scoring triple in the frame, while Aria Agle had a run-scoring triple.
               Hughes collected her sixth win of the season tossing a complete game. The sophomore struck out nine, walked two and scattered four hits. She allowed just two runs.
               WNCC had two players collect multiple hits. Schoepflin went 2-for-2 with three runs scored, two RBIs, a double and three walks; while Stubbs went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, four RBIs, a walk and a home run.
               In the second game, both squads scored three times in the first inning. WNCC, however opened up the contest in the second by plating six runs on just two hits. The big hit in the inning was a 2-run scoring triple by Britton to push the score to 9-3.
               Adams State added two more runs in the second to cut the lead to 9-5, but WNCC put the game away with five total runs in the fourth and fifth innings. Schoepflin had the big hit in the fourth inning, driving in two runs with a single.
               Amanda Jones collected the win in the circle, scattering eight hits and allowing six runs. She also struck out one and walked four.
               WNCC had six hits in the contest. Schoepflin finished the game going 1-for-2 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Bitton, Agle and Chelsi Townsend each had two RBIs in the contest.
               WNCC, 9-4, will open up Region IX play Saturday when they face Trinidad State Junior College in Trinidad.
