LIBERAL, Kan. – The Western Nebraska Community College softball team managed just two hits in dropping a 6-0 contest to Seward County Community College on Sunday.
The two squads were scheduled for a doubleheader, but the second game was wiped out because of rain.
It was a pitcher’s duel for the first three winnings between WNCC’s Ashton Hughes and Seward’s Sydney Cicchetti.
WNCC’s Sarah Hawryluk posted the first hit of the game for the Cougars, slapping a 2-out single in the third inning.
Seward struck once in the fourth inning to grab the 1-0 lead on just one hit and two errors. The Saints added two runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth.
The Cougars had prime scoring chances in the fifth as Chelsi Townsend and Mariah Faifer earned one-out walks, but both were stranded on base.
WNCC’s best scoring chance came in the seventh. Bree Bitton started things with a double to right field. Faifer followed with a one-out walk. The Cougars, however, left both runners in scoring position.
Hughes suffered the loss, allowing eight hits, walking two and striking out four. Cicchetti struck out 14 and allowed just two hits. Cicchetti also walked five.
The No. 18 Cougars will be back in action this weekend when they face CCC-Columbus and Iowa Lakes Community College in Columbus on Friday. They will then compete in the CCC-Columbus tournament over the weekend.
