TRINIDAD, Colo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team had plenty of offensive output on Sunday against Trinidad State Junior College. But, all that offensive output only led to a split of a double header against Trinidad State.
The Cougars dropped an 11-8 Empire Conference contest in the opener. WNCC game back in the non-conference game, pounding out 12 hits and putting up 13 runs in the 13-3 win.
In the opener, WNCC got behind the 8-ball early, falling behind 8-1 after two innings after the Trojans put up seven runs on six hits.
WNCC kept battling, slicing the deficit to 8-6 with two runs in the third inning and another three in the fifth. In the third, the Cougars had doubles by Paul Singh and Reimer Alamberry in helping the Cougars make a dent in the deficit.
The fifth inning saw the Cougars bat continue staying hot, scoring three runs on three hits. Camilo Baldelomar had a double in the contest and came around to score on Alamberry's home run to centerfield.
WNCC added another two runs in the sixth inning to come within 9-8. Josh Bride and Singh earned 2-out walks to start the comeback. Baldelomar followed with a double to score Bride and Singh.
The Cougars had four players with multiple hits. Singh led the way with a 3-for-3 game including four runs scored, two RBIs, a double and a home run.
Baldelomar, Alamberry and Rainer Tiel all collected two hits. Baldelomar had two RBIs and double, while Alamberry had two RBIs, a double and a home run.
Carlos Palomo took the loss, going just two innings in allowing eight runs on eight hits. The Gering graduate struck out two in allowing seven earned runs. Jake Stutzman and Joel Perez also saw time on the mound and shut down the Trojans, allowing a combined three runs on six hits.
WNCC started the second game, a non-conference game, on fire. The Cougars plated three runs in the first inning on just one hit and three walks. They added a single run by Baldelomar and three walks.
The Cougars put the game away in the fourth by plating five runs on three hits. The big hit was a double by Bride that scored Nelson Quintero.
WNCC added another four runs in the seventh on five hits. The big hit came from the bat of Jake Vore, who had a 2-run home run. Quintero also had a double in the inning.
The Cougars managed 12 hits in the contest. Baldemar and Tiel each had three hits, while Quintero had two hits. Baldelomar finished with three runs scored, a RBI and a double; while Tiel had two runs scored, two RBIs and a double. Also collecting doubles were Quintero and Bride.
Carlos Luzon picked up the win on the mound, going five innings. The sophomore scattered five hits and allowed three runs. He also struck out two and walked two. Terry McNabb threw the final two innings, allowing just one hit in facing six batters.
WNCC 6-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play, will next be in action Wednesday when they travel to Colby, Kan., before taking on McCook Community College on Saturday and Sunday on the road.
