WNCC baseball drops two to McCook


               McCook -- The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team couldn't connect on timely hits in dropping a doubleheader to McCook Community College on Sunday in Empire Conference action.
               WNCC's Carlos Luzon pitched well in the first game, but McCook scored three times in the third inning and rode to the 3-1 win. McCook kept its stellar pitching going in game two in limiting the Cougars to just five hits in securing the 2-1 win.
               The Cougars, who swept McCook on Saturday, fell to 2-4 in conference play and 8-10 overall.
               IN the opener, WNCC couldn't get its offense untracked in getting just five hits in the game. McCook scored the only three runs they needed in the third inning on two hits and two errors.
               WNCC, though, had plenty of scoring opportunities including getting the first two batters aboard in the first, second and fifth innings. WNCC tried a late-inning comeback as Rainer Tiel walked and Max Brennen singled in get on base in the sixth, but both were left stranded.
               WNCC finally scratched a run across in the seventh as Jake Peltz opened the inning by reaching on an error. Paul Singh and Camilo Baldelomar then singled. Peltz came around to score on Baldelomar's hit. Kevin Sanford then singled to load the bases with no outs, but that was it for the Cougars offensive hits.
               Singh paced the team offensively, going 2-for-3. Only three other Cougars managed a single in the contest.
               Carlos Luzon took the loss despite throwing a strong game. The sophomore went six innings in scattering five hits and allowing three runs. He also struck out two and walked just one.
               Game two saw all the scoring in the first inning. Kevin Sanford put WNCC on top with a 2-out home run for the quick 1-0 lead. McCook came back and plated two runs in the bottom of the frame on four hits, including two doubles.
               After that, neither team touched home plate again. WNCC, however, had scoring opportunities to tie the game in the second and fourth inning, but couldn't the tying run across.
               Jeff Schmitt took the loss on the mound despite tossing five strong innings. Schmitt allowed six hits while striking out four.
               WNCC managed just five hits in the contest. Nelson Quintero paced the team with a 3-for-3 contest.
               WNCC, 8-10, will be back in action Tuesday when they face Gateway Community College and Seminole Community College in Mesa, Ariz.
