PHOENIX -- The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team suffered through a lack off offense in dropping its final game of the South Mountain tournament in falling to Scottsdale Community College 8-2 Saturday afternoon.
The Cougar men managed just six hits in the contest and gave up four early runs to finish the tournament with a 1-4 record.
WNCC started the game strong, loading the bases with just one out, but couldn't score any runs. Scottsdale came back and scored one run on two hits. Scottsdale then added three runs on just two hits for a 4-0 lead after too innnings.
The Cougars finally cracked home plate with two runs in the sixth inning. Paul Singh started the inning with a single and came around to score on Kevin Sanford's single. Sanford later scored on a Rainer Alamberry single to cut the deficit in halft, 4-2.
That was it for WNCC as Scottsdale came back with four runs over the next three innings to grab the 8-2 win.
Jeff Schmitt took the loss on the mound, going six innings and giving up five runs, four hits and striking out six. Terry McNabb finished out the game, going two innings and giving up three runs and four hits.
Offensively, WNCC managed just six hits, all from the first four batters. Sanford and Camilo Baldelomar each went 2-for-4. Sanford had an RBI an drun scored, while Alamberry had the other RBI.
WNCC, 9-16, will return home this week with four contests. The Cougars will battle Colorado State Tuesday before hosting McCook Community College in an Empire Conference game.
