TRINIDAD, COLO. -- The Western Nebraska Community College softball team split a pair of Region IX games with Trinidad State Junior College on Saturday.
The Cougars dropped game one 4-3 before topping the Trojans 4-3 in the second contest. The loss stopped a four-game winning streak.
In the first game, WNCC went up 3-0 after four innings before Trinidad scored two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings.
The fourth inning was the big inning for the Cougars as Sarah Hawryluk led off with a triple and scored on a Ashton Hughes home run to left field. Allie Alverson later doubled in the inning, but was stranded in scoring position.
Hughes took the loss in the circle, going six innings, scattering six hits, walking two and striking out five. She also gave up two home runs in the loss.
Offensively, the Cougars managed just five hits.
WNCC rebounded in the second game, pounding out eight hits in earning the doubleheader split. The Cougars scored single runs in the first and third inning before scoring two runs in the sixth for the win.
Jacqui Cappuccilli started the offensive momentum early for the Cougars, blasting a 2-out home run to right field for the quick lead. WNCC went up 2-1 in the third as Jordan Schoepflin doubled home Megan Bourdon.
Schoepflin paced the Cougars with a 3-for-4 game with a RBI and a double. Hawryluk also had a good game, going 2-for-3.
Amanda Jones picked up the win in the circle, going seven innings in scattering eight hits. Jones also struck out five and walked one..
WNCC, 10-5, will be back in action today when they face Luna Community College in Las Vegas, N.M.
