WNCC softball goes 2-1 in first day of Midland Tourney

 MIDLAND, Texas – The Western Nebraska Community College softball team went 3-1 to open the Midland Tournament on Friday in Midland, Texas.
                The Cougars opened the tournament with an 8-5 win over Claradon College as Ashton Hughes picked u her third win of the season. Hughes also got the win in the team’s final game of the day, a 6-3 victory over Odessa College. WNCC’s only blemish on the day was a 5-0 loss to pre-season ranked Midland College.
                In the opener, WNCC scored runs in the first four innings to run to an 8-0 lead. Megan Bourdon started the tournament with a lead-off home run. Jacqui Cappuccilli also smacked a home run in the second inning. Bourdon and Cappuccilli each had doubles in the win.
Mariah Faifer went 1-for-1 with three walks, while Aria Agle went 3-for-4 with two runs scored and a three RBIs. Cappuccilli went 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while Bourdon went 3-for-5 with four RBIs.
                Hughes picked up the win, going seven innings, striking out five, walking two and allowing nine hits.
                In the other win, Hughes picked up her fourth win of the day, going seven innings while striking out six and walking three. She also gave up six hits.
                WNCC started things with three runs in the third inning, but watched Odessa score two in the bottom of the frame. The Cougars then added two runs in the fifth and a single run in the fifth for the win.
                Cappuccilli led the way with a 3-for-4 game, with four RBIS, a double and a seventh-inning home run. Jordan Schoeopflin also went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and a double. Mariah Faifer, Allie Alverson also stroked base hits. Jordan Schoepflin went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs scored and two RBIs.
                Midland gave the Cougars their only loss on the day. Amanda Jones took the loss in the circle, going seven innings and scattering nine hits and allowing five runs.
                The Cougar offense managed just three hits in the game, singles by Jocelyn Stubbs, Chelsi Townsend and Alverson.
                WNCC, 5-2, will have two more games Saturday in the Midland Tornament.
