GREAT BEND, Kan. — The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team evened its season record at 2-2 with a 9-6 win over Barton Community College in 10 innings on Friday in Great Bend, Kan.

WNCC ignited for four runs in the top of the 10th inning to capture the win.

“It was a good win for us,” WNCC coach Mike Jones said. “Offensively, we played a lot better today than we did in our previous three games.”

WNCC totaled seven hits in the contest. Kevin Sanford led the way offensively by going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in. Camilo Baldelomar went 2-for-4 and Jake Vora drove in two runs. Also collecting a hit in the game for WNCC was Nelson Quintero. Quintero scored three runs.

The Cougars held a 4-0 lead into the seventh inning before Barton tallied five runs to grab a 5-4 advantage. WNCC scratched across the tying run in the eighth.

“We made a lot of improvements,” Jones said. “We were more aggressive on the bases, we played at a faster tempo and we played much better defense. We just played a lot better overall.”

John Bravard earned the win on the mound out of the bullpen. He struck out three and allowed just one run on one hit in three innings of work. Carlos Luzon was credited with a no decision after starting the game on the hill. Luzon pitched five scoreless innings. He scattered three hits and struck out four.

“Carlos Luzon had a great start for us,” Jones said. “He really controlled the game for us for the first five innings.”

WNCC and Barton will square off in a doubleheader today beginning at 11 a.m.

Jones said Tim Beard will start game one on the mound and Carlos Palomo will start game two.
