WNCC softball sweeps Dawson 11-0, 7-3

GLENDIVE, Mont. -- The Western Nebraska Community College softball team notched another two conference wins Friday afternoon in taking a doubleheader from Dawson Community College.

In the opener, Megan Bourdon had a home run and a double and the Cougars combined on seven doubles in registering the 11-0 win. The nightcap saw Stephanie Townsend strike out nine in leading the Cougars to a 7-3 win.

WNCC (24-16 overall, 9-3 conference) will face Dawson Community College in another doubleheader Saturday beginning at noon in Glendive.

"Game one we played well," WNCC coach Maria Winn-Ratliff said. "We pitched well and played good defense. We scored early and often and Katie [Groves] hit well all day. The pitchers did a good job. We need to play better tomorrow [Saturday]."

WNCC put on a hitting clinic in the opener with 15 hits and eight going for extra bases. The team had two doubles each from Adena Hagen, Katie Groves and Jacqui Cappuccilli. Bourdon also had a double and then lead off the fifth inning with a home run to left field.

Groves went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs, while Cappuccilli had three runs scored. Hagen and Megan Burditt each went 2-for-4 with Hagen adding two runs scored and a RBI, while Burditt had one of each.

Taylor Anderson picked up the win, going three innings while striking out four and allowing three hits. Brittany Enterline finished off the game by throwing the final two innings, striking out two and allowing 2 hits.

The second game saw Townsend pick up the win by going the distance. The sophomore allowed three runs and five hits. She also walked six and struck out nine.

The Cougars struck first with two runs in the first inning. Burditt reached base on an error followed by a single by Groves. Cappucilli drove both in with a single for the 2-0 lead.

WNCC added single runs in the third and fourth inning. The third inning saw Groves rocket a double and scored on a double by Ashton Hughes. WNCC added three more runs in the seventh for a 7-1 lead before letting Dawson have two runs to make the score a tad closer.

Groves led the team with a 3-for-4 game, including a double, three runs scored and two RBIs. Hughes was the only other Cougar with multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a double and RBI.
