WNCC baseball splits with Northeastern Colorado

STERLING, Colo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team received a shut out, complete game pitching performance from Tim Beard in game one, but couldn't carry the momentum into game two as the Cougars split an Empire Conference doubleheader against Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo., Saturday.

Beard scattered five hits and struck out three in helping the Cougars to the 2-0 win. In the second game of the twinbill, the Plainsmen exploded for six, fourth-inning runs for a 9-2 win.

Both teams will return to the diamond in Sterling for another conference doubleheader.

WNCC coach Mike Jones said pitching was deciding factor in the contests.

"Tim Beard in game one was really good. It was an excellent start for us in getting the complete game shut out," WNCC coach Mike Jones said. "He had a lot of groundball outs and had strikeouts. He got out of trouble in some innings. it was a real gutsy performance by him. We were able to find a way to get two runs on the board and play good defense behind him.

"in game two the pitching was bad from the very beginning. We didn't through enough strikes and walked too many guys and gave them all kinds of scoring opportunities. Today was really about pitching. We were real good in the first game and not so good in the second one.
Beard was keeping the Plainsmen in check through the all seven innings. WNCC finally took control in the fourth inning as they scored two runs. Camilo Baldelomor started things with a double. Nelson Quintero then had a runs-scoring hit followed by Trace Marsden plating the second run with a hit.

The Cougars managed just six hits in the contest as Baldelomor led the team with two hits, including a double.

In the second game, WNCC scored first on a first-inning home run by Elvis Garcia. That was the last time the Cougars would see the lead as the Plainsmen answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first. NJC then put the game away in the fourth inning with a six-run inning and a 9-1 lead.

WNCC added one more run in the seventh as Jared Baros tripled and scored on a Marsden sacrifice fly.

WNCC managed just three hits in the contest

Rodil Martinez took the loss on the mound, going 3 1/3 innings while allowing six hits, six walks, and striking out four.

WNCC, 17-22 overall and 11-5 in conference play, will send Armani Gonzalez and Julio Davila to the mound as starters for the conference doubleheader Sunday.

"We have two more games tomorrow [Sunday]," Jones said. "We are still in the hunt for the conference title. We have to get two more quality starts on Sunday and find a way to put some runs on the board."
