WNCC men claim second win of season, down Nebraska All-Stars 112-38

The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team put six players in double figures as they exploded to a 112-38 win Saturday night over the Nebraska All-stars for their second win of the season in the second day of the Cougar Classic at Cougar Palace.

Eastern Wyoming College also recorded their second win of the season in the first game of the day with a 72-69 win as four players netted double-figures led by Casey Robinson and Scotty McRae with 17 points.

The Cougars Deividas Busma recorded a double-double as the 6-11 sophomore finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Daniel Smith led the Cougars with a 20-point performace, while Drew Eisinger finished with 19 points, Jamie Eisinger with 14, and Tearon Hill and Kelvin Franklin with 10 points each.

The Cougars also finished with nine 3-pointers on the night as Drew Eisigner buried five while Hinkle, Smith, Franklin, Hickinson and Drew Eisinger each had had.

“I thought we played with good intensity and set the tone right away,” WNCC coach Brian Joyce said. “It sometimes is difficult against all-star teams to do that because they slow the game down and the put you in a position where you play their pace."

The Cougars ran out to a 19-0 lead in the first half before the Nebraska All-stars scored its first bucket with 14:32 to play on a 3-point shot by Ryan Guzman. WNCC came back with back-to-back buckets – a 3-pointer by Franklin and a dunk by Hill to push the lead to 26-5. WNCC went to grab a 50.5 halftime lead.

The Cougars kept playing tough in the second half, opening up a 59-17 lead with 15:35 to play. The Cougars scored triple digits with under five minutes to play on a Devin West bucket for a 100-35 score.

WNCC’s Lloyd Hickinson finished of the Cougars scoring spree with three dunks in the final two minutes for the 112-38 win.

WNCC will return to action Thursday through Saturday when they will play in the Colby Classic. The Cougars will face Colby on Thursday, before facing Ft. Scott Community College on Friday and Neosha County Community College on Saturday.

“This will be good for our guys. We will see where we are at and see how we have progressed up to this point,” Joyce said. “We will see how much we play as a team on the road and that is where you will find out what you are all about. With a young team, playing on the road is the real challenge.

“It is early and we will go through some peaks and valleys. We expect to win at home like we did here. Hopefully, we will use this as momentum and have good practices next week and be ready to go on the road.”

As much as WNCC’s win was decided early, EWC win Saturday was not an easy contest. The Lancers earned their second win of the season with a hard-fought win over Colby Community College.

“I am going to beat myself up for by letting them get back in that game. Our kids were playing well and they made some shots late. We really need to play better then that, but getting a win against a tough JayHawk Conference team, whether it is by three or 20, is the same,” EWC coach Casey Jones said. “We were all excited to play another Junior College team after playing four-year schools in scrimmages and the all-star team [Friday night]. I am proud of them [for winning] and this is a good win."

The Lancers led 39-36 at intermission and was up by 10 points in the second half only to watch the Trojans come back and tie the game at 66 with under a minute to play.

The Lancers’ Casey Robinson made two free throws to put them up 68-66 before Colby’s Andrew Engel nailed a trey to give Colby a 69-68 lead with 40 seconds to play. EWC hit clutch free throws down the stretch from Dane Hill and George Williams to get the win.

One of the biggest reasons for the Lancer win was a defensive stop with five seconds to play, in which Colby Andrew Engel started to drive to the hoop only to lose control of the ball and a hustling EWC defense gained control with three seconds to play to preserve the win.

Scotty McRae and Casey Robinson each led the Lancers with 17 points. McRae also pulled down seven rebounds and collected two blocked shots, while Robinson had seven rebounds and three 3-pointers. Also collecting double-digits for EWC were Leo Morris with 12 points and George Williams with 11.

EWC now hits the road for games Tuesday and Wednesday at Trinidad State Junior College and Otero Junior College. Jones is excited to be 2-0 on the season.

“This [road trip] will be a challenge for the all-new team to see what we are like on the road,” Jones said. “I am looking forward to the trip.”
