WNCC women top EWC for 24th win of season

The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team started strong and never backed off on its intensity in posting a commanding 76-46 sub-region win over Eastern Wyoming College Tuesday evening at Cougar Palace.
The Cougars opened up with a 10-0 run and led one time in the second half by 36 points (62-26) in capturing their seventh straight win. The win moved the Cougars to 8-2 in sub-region play and 24-4 overall. For the Lancers, they dropped to 6-4 in sub-region play and 16-11 overall.
The Cougars had just two players score in double figures, but had 10 players overall register points. Lile Havili led all scorers with 21 points, including going 10 of 16 from the field. Also hitting for double digits was Shalisa Moffit with 12 points.
Havili said this was a good win for the team.

“We came out with a lot of intensity as a team because we lost to them last time we played them,” the freshman from Utah said. “This was a big game for us tonight and it wasn’t hard for us to start strong as a team because we wanted this game more than they did.”
Definitely the Cougars started strong as the Cougars led 15-2 with 12 minutes to play behind the inside play of Havili, who had eight early points. The Lancers only had one time where they had back-to-back buckets, and after that Lyndie Puckett drained back-to-back 3-pointers to push the Cougars lead to 27-12. WNCC finished of the half on an 8-1 lead to lead 37-18 at intermission.
EWC coach Tom Andersen said it was just a matter that WNCC played extremely well and his team was flat.
“We came out flat and they came out hitting their shots right away and had some early runs and we got down,” he said. “They played extremely well and we just couldn’t answer the bell tonight. That is what happens.”
The one aspect that Anderson was pleased with was the fact they out-rebounded the Cougars 47-36, behind 18 boards from Brittany Cross. But that was the only highlight for the Lancers as they settled for 21 percent shooting in the first half and were just 23 percent for the game.
“We out-rebounded them which has been a struggle for us, but we shot poorly and we were hesitant on offense,” he said. “We just had way too many turnovers. We just didn’t play well and they played well. Give them credit.”
The Lancers scored the first two buckets of the second half, but after that it was all Cougars as they went on a 25-4 run that put the Cougars up 62-26. Moffit had two big treys in that run to help the run. After that, the Lancers held their own with WNCC, but it was a little too late.
Havili said this win helps keep the confidence up for the remainder of the season. WNCC’s last loss was to EWC 65-63 back on Jan. 24.
“The more wins the better for us because it will prepare us for the regional tournament and hopefully nationals,” she said. “We will now have practice Wednesday and Thursday and then we have these last two games. Coach has told us to practice as hard as we can.”
The Lancers were led in scoring by Courtney Dollison with 13 points followed by Cross with 10.
WNCC will next be in action Friday when they host Lamar Community College in their final home game of the season. It will also be dorm parent recognition as well as sophomore recognition for the three sophomores, Moffit, Laurin Rivera, and Ashley Stevens.
EWC will next be in action Thursday when they host Northeastern Junior College.
