JUNTA, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team
captured its 20th win of the season with a 75-56 win over Otero
Junior College Saturday afternoon over Otero Junior College.
The
Cougars put three players in double figures and never trailed in the game in
running record to 20-5 on the season. It was the 27th straight year
the Cougars have registered 20 or more wins in a season.
The
contest was highlighted by three Cougars that hit for double digits. Ashley
Stevens led all scorers with 17 followed by Lile Havili with 15, and Lyndie
Puckett with 12 points.
A big
key for the Cougars was a strong first half, were the Cougars connected on six
3-pointers. The Cougars finished nine 3-pointers as a team. Puckett led the way
with four 3-pointers.
WNCC
jumped out to a 6-0 lead before Otero sliced the lead to 14-13. It was then
that Puckett heated up from beyond the arc, burying three straight 3-pointers
to run the lead to 23-13. Moments later, Puckett buried a fourth trey, while
Ally Vasquez and Angela Vigil each had one 3-pointer in the first half. WNCC
led 41-32 at intermission.
In
the second half, WNCC never really let Otero in the contest. WNCC ran off six
early points, four from Havili before Otero came back to come within 47-40.
That was when WNCC heated up against, going on a 15-7 run to lead 62-47 as Abi
Lujan buried a 3-pointer and Havili had six points.
WNCC
finished the contest with a 7-0 run for the win.

(20-5) will be back in action Tuesday when they host Colorado Christian junior
varsity at 6 p.m.
