The
Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team put five players in
double figures and picked up 24 steals in picking up their 21st
victory of the season with a commanding 97-38 win over Colorado Christian
junior varsity Tuesday evening at Cougar Palace.
The
Cougars had just one tie in the contest and after that it was all Cougars as
everyone that played scored.
“It
is a good win and everyone got in, too, so that was a good team effort,”
sophomore Shalisa Moffit said.
Lile
Havili paced the Cougar attack with a double-double of 17 points and 10
rebounds. Havili was one of just a five players that hit the double digit
plateau. Liz Dogan had a good game, finishing with 15 points and five rebounds,
while Moffit and Lyndie Puckett each had 11 points. Allyson Vasquez also
collected 10 points.
Moffitt
said it was a game that the defense stood out. The Cougars registered 24
steals, led by Dogan with four.
“For
the most part it was a good defensive game,” Moffit said. “I don’t know how
many steals we had, but we rebounded well tonight both offensively and
defensively. The transition is where we get a lot of our points because the
fast breaks is kind of our strong suit.”
WNCC
started somewhat slow, leading just 19-10. It was a Puckett 3-pointer that
opened up the Cougars’ offense as they went on a 22-4 run to 41-14 lead. WNCC
led at intermission 45-17.
The
second half was even more impressive as the Cougar defense was pretty much in
sync. WNCC outscored the Colorado Christian Cougars 52-21. WNCC opened the
second half with a 10-0 run and then led 70-20 off of seven Dogan points, four
from Moffit and a bucket by Puckett.
After
Colorado Christian’s Jen Lapp nailed a 3-pointer, the Cougar defense picked up
steam to run the score to 81-25 as Ally Vasquez and Kaylee Biddell had big
buckets in the stretch. Later, Sophia Softas-Nall had four points to push the
lead to 60, 91-31, before Puckett finished off the scoring with back-to-back
field goals.
The
way the Cougars played, especially in the second half, is the way they will
need to play in the final two weeks of the season. The Cougars will hit the
road for a crucial sub-region contest at McCook Community College on Friday.
They
will then return home for contests next week when they face Eastern Wyoming
College and Lamar Community College, two teams that handed them losses earlier
this semester.
“We
beat McCook the first time, but we still have to play hard,” Moffit said. “Then
we have to beat Eastern Wyoming if we want to get a good seed at the regional
tournament.”
