LAMAR,
Colo. -- The Western Nebraska Community College softball team went to 6-3 on
the year after shutting out Colby Community College in a doubleheader on Monday
in Lamar, Colo.
The
Cougars put together an 11-hit attack that was highlighted by five doubles in
dropping Colby 7-0 in game one. The second game was just as impressive from the
plate as the Cougars pounded out 11 hits in getting the 12-0 win.
Monday’s
two wins came off the heels of a split on Sunday in Odessa, Texas. The Cougars
started off Sunday with a 9-4 win over Coastal Bend College before falling 10-2
to No. 10 Odessa.
In
the first game against Colby, the Cougars put together timely hitting and a
great pitching performance from Shelby McGraw. McGraw tossed six innings,
allowing just one hit and striking out four in picking up the win.
Offensively,
the Cougars were in full stride. Four different players had multi-hit games.
Morgan Varoz led the way with a 3-for-4 with three singles, a run scored and
RBI. Lindsay Guymon, Alysa Linford, and Kelsey Bernhardt each had two hits.
Guymon had two doubles, Linford a double, and Bernhardt two singles and two
RBIs.
The
second game was also impressive on both sides of the ball. Jordan Smith tossed
four strong innings in picking up the win. Smith, a freshman from Wellville,
Utah, scattered four hits while striking out seven to get her third win of the
year. RaVae Herrera tossed the fifth inning while striking out one.
Offensively,
the Cougars had a balanced attack. Guymon led the way with a 3-for-3 game with
three RBIs and two runs scored. Bernhardt also picked up multiple hits, going
2-for-2 with an RBI. Linford also had three RBIs in the win.
WNCC
never looked back in the win, plating three runs in the first and then added
five in the second. The Cougars then added two runs each in the third and
fourth for the win.
Sunday’s
win against Coastal Bend was very similar to Monday’s contest where the team
pounded out 11 hits. Ball led the hitting attack with a 3-for-3 game with two
RBIs and a run scored. Guymon also had two hits in four at bats.
Smith
had another strong showing on the mound in the win, going seven innings in
scattering four hits, giving up four runs and striking out one.
The
contest against Odessa was controlled by the ranked team as jumped to a 6-0
lead after three innings, including a four-run second inning. WNCC stayed
strong, however, and scratched across single runs in the fourth fifth.
WNCC
managed just five hits in the contest, including doubles from Ball, Guymon, and
Herrera,
WNCC
(6-3) will be back in action this Saturday when they compete in the Frank
Phillips tourney in Borger, Texas, where they will face Dodge City Community
