WNCC softball goes 1-2 in second day of Butler Classic

EL DORADO, Kan. — The Western Nebraska Community College softball team went 1-2 in the second day of the Butler tournament on Saturday.
The Cougars downed Indian Hills Community College 1-0 before falling to Butler Community College 9-7 and Eastern Oklahoma College 9-4.
In their win, the Cougars’ Bianca Duran struck out seven and allowed four hits while walking none. The freshman faced just 26 batters in the seven innings, while throwing 85 pitches.
WNCC scored the winning run in the fifth as Aria Agle was hit by a pitch and scored on a Brandi Percival ground out. That was all they needed as the Duran and the rest of the defense shut down Indian HIlls.
Sarah Hawryluk led the offensive attack with a 2-for-3 game. The only other hit by a Cougar hitter was Mariah Shepherd with a single.
WNCC then dropped its next two games. The Butler game was exciting as the Cougars fought back from a 9-0 deficit to almost pull off the win. Butler held a 4-0 lead after two innings, before the Cougars scored five times in the third.
WNCC also fell to Eastern Oklahoma after leading 3-0 at one point. WNCC gave up five runs in the third and then four more in the fourth and fifth innings. Eastern Oklahoma pounded out 15 hits in the game, compared to just five for WNCC.
WNCC will be back in action Wednesday when it travels to face Northeastern Junior College in Sterling, Colo.
