Cougar women score 102 points in win over Oglala Lakota

The Western Nebraska Community College women’s basketball team captured their seventh straight victory in dominating style by posting an 102-46 win over Oglala Lakota College in the second day of the Thanksgiving Classic at Cougar Palace.
The 102 points is the most the Cougars have scored since November 2007 when they scored 123 against Salish Kootenai College in the team’s season opener.
The Cougars (9-1) put five players in double figures in the convincing win, which saw the bench finish with 45 combined points in the victory. Samantha Sanders led the way for the Cougars with 18 points followed by Jasmine Shaffer with 17 points. Shaffer also sizzled the nets from beyond the arc, nailing three 3-pointers.
Shaffer said this team played pretty well to finish their portion of the Thanksgiving Classic.
“We played pretty good. We passed the ball around a lot and everyone was contributing on offense and defense,” the 5-foot-3 sophomore from Ft. Lupton, Colo., said. “I think it was a very good team effort.”
What stood out for the Cougar women was how unselfish the team was on the day, finishing with 33 assists. Sanders and Idil Ozbuyrak led the way with five assists each followed by Kyra Peterson, ChaCha Ofoegbu and Ajsa Zdovc each with four assists.
Shaffer said they shared the ball well as well as shooting well from the field. WNCC shot 57 percent from the field on the night while holding Oglala to 41 percent shooting.
“That is one thing that coach harps on us about is getting that extra pass and tonight we all showed the ball well and we made sure everyone was getting their points,” she said. “We have been working a lot on shots. We have been in the gym seven days a week taking extra shots. That helped us in finishing our shots, making our free throws and finishing our layups which gave us trouble at the beginning of the season.”
Besides Sanders and Shaffer combining on 35 points, three other Cougars also hit the double-digit column. Ofoegbu finished with 14 points followed by Leona Garrett with 12 and Peterson with 10 points.
WNCC led from start to finish in the contest as they went on a 23-0 run to open up a 25-2 lead and never looked back in costing to a 50-20 halftime lead. The Cougars kept their foot on the accelerator in the second half widening their lead. Zdovc put the Cougars over the century mark for the first time this season as she nailed a 3-pointer with 20 seconds to play.
The women’s portion of the Thanksgiving Classic wraps up Saturday afternoon with Oglala Lakota facing Colorado Northwestern at 1 p.m. followed by Eastern Wyoming taking on the Nebraska All-stars at 3 p.m.
The Cougars will next be in action next weekend when they travel to the Air Force Prep tournament Colorado Springs, Colo., where they will face Air Force Prep, Adams State junior varsity, and Murray State. They will then return home to face the Nebraska School of Technical Agriculture-Curtis on Dec. 6 before wrapping up the first semester with the WNCC Holiday Classic Dec. 8-10.
