Cougar volleyball team finish day one 4-0 at Salt Lake


The WNCC women's volleyball team showed why they are ranked No. 5 in the pre-season polls after starting the Salt Lake Tournament off in fine fashion with a perfect 4-0 mark.

The squad started things by running past Snow College 30-18, 30-12, Yavapai 30-24, 30-22 and then defeating the defending national champs College of Southern Idaho 30-25, 30-28. It was the first time Green has beaten Southern Idaho. The team then finished off day one with a heart-wrenching 3-game win against Salt Lake Community College 30-16, 28-30, 18-16. Amy Winters, assistant coach, text messaged and said that the players were tired the last two games. and it was a tough win.

In the win against Snow College, pre-season first team all-American selection Bianca Rivera was electric from the serving line finishing with a team high seven aces. Gering's Stacie Meisner finished with four aces. Leticia Kuhn led the team with seven kills followed by Jenny Eichler with four kills.

Against Yavapa Leticia Kuhn and Jenny Eichler each had 11 kills and Soriana had four blocks; and against Southern Idaho, Leticha had 11 kills and two blocks and Bianca Rivera had eight digs.

In the big win against Salt Lake, Leticha finished with 19 kills followed by Shawntell Jones with four blocks, Jenny Eichler with three blocks, Soriana with 30 set assists and Bianca with 20 digs.

The Cougars, 4-0 in the tournament and 9-0 overall, will have one more pool play match Saturday morning against another top-20 ranked team in Northern Idaho before beginning bracket play that afternoon.

Way to go Cougar ladies! You are awesome!
