COLBY, Kan. - It didn't take long for the Western Nebraska Community College women's basketball team to rebound from its one-point, season-opening setback on Thursday.
WNCC put four players in double figures to register a 76-62 win over the Hastings Junior Varsity on Friday afternoon in the second day of the Colby Ambassador Classic in Colby, Kan. The win evened the Cougars' record at 1-1 on the season.
"I don't think we played as well defensively as we did the first night, but we played well enough to win," WNCC assistant coach Jennifer Pedersen said. "We picked up the pace a little more in the second half with our pressure and seemed to play a little better."
Shaquilah Davis led a balanced Cougar scoring effort with 16 points. She also dished out three assists, blocked two shots and collected four steals. Stormye Everett tallied 15 points, SeLina Ysac had 14 points and Tawny Drexler added 13.
Everett led WNCC on the glass with seven rebounds. Ysac pulled down six boards and had a team-high five steals. Janae Willis finished with five rebounds and Lorena Medairos had three assists.
WNCC finished the game shooting 49 percent from the field. The Cougars shot 71 percent from the free-throw line compared to a 50 percent effort from the charity stripe on Thursday.
After leading 38-33 at the half, the Cougars increased their lead to as many as 17 in the second half.
The Cougars conclude play in the tournament today at 3 p.m. against Colby Community College.
