Fort Morgan High School alum Cami Weimer helped the Western Nebraska Community College Cougars capture their 10th consecutive Region IX volleyball championship at Lamar last weekend.
Of course, titles are nothing new to this powerhouse program. They won last year’s NJCAA national championship and now take a No. 2 ranking into “Sweet 16” tournament play in Council Bluffs, Iowa, on Nov. 20-22.
The Cougars (56-3 record) rallied past Northeastern Junior College from Sterling 23-25, 25-16, 25-7, 25-14 to clinch their regional “10-peat.” They also swept NJC 25-21, 25-17, 25-22 earlier in this tournament.
Weimer was the Fort Morgan Mustangs’ leading hitter just one year ago. She also ranked among Mustang leaders in blocking, serving and digging as coach Tom Gonzales’ team reached 4A regional play.
Although up-to-date Cougar stats were not available, Weimer had slammed 68 kills during WNCC’s first 37 matches this fall. She ranked fifth on a team filled with terrific international talent, like 6’3” middle blocker Fatima Balza from Merida, Venezeula, and her team-leading 312 kills to that point.
Other WNCC players hail from places such as Poland and Puerto Rico. Weimer’s the only Colorado product, although there are two Gering, Neb., graduates and another from Provo, Utah.
“She’s definitely part of a diverse and interesting team,” dad Tim Weimer said. “And all the girls are great.”
Cami’s the daughter of Tim and Jeri Weimer. She’s listed as a 5’8” outside hitter on the WNCC roster.
Watch for details about the Cougars’ quest to win another national title in The Times next week.
