The win pushed the Cougars to 53-3 overall and it was marked the fifth straight year the squad went undeated in the South Sub-region with a 10-0 mark.
Saturday afternoon, the Cougars utilized their entire roster in getting the victory. WNCC opened the first set by winning 25-5. Back on Oct. 4, the Cougars defeated Trinidad State 25-1 in the opening set. This time, though, it was the serving of Gregner Quinones that sparked the team with 14 points and eight aces.
WNCC assistant coach Nicole Gonzalez said the serving was too much for the Trojans to handle.
“We served pretty tough,” she said. “Because of that serving, we didn’t get to hit as much because Trinidad had trouble passing.”
Quinones also led the team with eight digs, while Kaleinani Kabalis finished with seven digs.
Naomi Flinders was next in line in serving with six points and two aces. Flinders also had six set assists. Sabina Piegza had 21 set assists.
Gabriela Aviles paced the Cougars in hitting with eight kills, while Paulina Piegza had seven kills. Paulina Piegza also ahd two blocks, followed by Fatima Balza with two blocks and Gering’s Whitney Roth with a solo block.
WNCC will next be in action next week when they compete in the Region IX South tournament in Lamar, Colo. The Cougars will have a first round bye and won’t play until Friday morning against the winner of a first-round contest. Pairings will be announced on Monday. The winner of the regional tournament will qualify for the NJCAA national tournament in Council Bluffs, Iowa, Nov. 20-22.
