WNCC softball gets home run from Duran, Shiels-Brophy in sweep over North Platte

NORTH PLATTE -- Bianca Duran and Lindsey Shiels-Brophy each had two home runs and the 17th-ranked Western Nebraska Community College softball team swept a doubleheader from North Platte Community College Wednesday in North Platte.
Duran, Shiels-Brophy and Shelby McGraw each homered in game one as the Cougars pounded out 13 hits in the 11-1 win. WNCC was just as explosive in game two behind a 3-hit pitching performance from McGraw in getting the 11-3 win.
The wins move the Cougars to 32-7 on the year. More importantly, it was WNCC's ninth straight win as they enter an important conference doubleheader against 39-3 Otero Junior College and Trinidad State Junior College Friday and Saturday at Volunteer Field.
The Cougars played well in both games, combining for 27 hits and committing just two fielding errors. In the opening game, the Cougars had four players register two more hits. Duran had three RBIs and a home run, while Cottle had a double, two runs scored. Shiels-Brophy had a home run and three RBIs.
It didn't take long for the Cougars offense to get cranked up. Duran led off the game, taking the second pitch and hammering it over the leftfield fence for the 1-0 lead. WNCC added two more in the second inning as Hailee Mecham doubled and then Duran delivered a 2-run scoring single.
The Cougars opened up the game in the third inning with five runs. Council led off with single followed by Cottle getting a double. McGraw followed with a 3-run home run. Shiels-Brophy followed with a solo shot to help WNCC lead 8-0.
Duran picked up the win, going three innings in allowing two hits, one run and striking out three. McGraw tossed the final two innings in striking out two and not allowing a hit.
Game two saw the same kind of offensive explosion as three different players registered three hits apiece. Duran, Council, and Cottle all had three hits. McGraw and Shiels-Brophy each had two hits in the win. Duran had a home run, three runs scored and a RBI from her lead-off spot, while Council had two RBIs. Cottle had two RBIs in the contest.
WNCC scored three times in the first on four singles, and then added two runs in the second on three singles. Shiels-Brophy started the long ball with a solo shot in the third before Duran had a solo shot in the fourth inning.
The Cougars put the game away in the fifth with four runs with McGraw getting a double and Cottle smacking a 2-run single.
