Monteagudo powers WNCC baseball team past Trinidad State

TRINIDAD, Colo. - Aurelio Monteagudo blasted three home runs as the Western Nebraska Community College baseball team snapped a five-game losing streak on Sunday with a 7-1 win over Trinidad State Junior College.

The nine-inning contest was a non-conference game. Trinidad State swept a doubleheader from the Cougars on Saturday.

In the win on Sunday, Monteagudo finished the game going 4-for-5 with five runs batted in and three runs scored. Also finishing with multiple hits in the game for WNCC was Elvis Garcia. Garcia went 3-for-5 with a run scored.

Two other Cougars collected hits in the game, including Oscar Rodriquez and Jared Baros. Rodriguez and Jason Sloan both drove in runs.

Gustavo Sanchez earned the win on the mound for WNCC. He allowed just one run on three hits in 6 1/3 innings of work. Sanchez (1-1) struck out five Trojans. Ben Doran pitched the final 2 2/3 innings. He allowed just one hit.

WNCC trailed 1-0 early before tying the score at 1-1 in the top of the third inning. The Cougars took the lead for good with a run in the fourth. Leading 4-1 after eight innings of play, WNCC tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring.

The Cougars (5-9) return to action on Wednesday in Fort Collins, Colo., against the Colorado State University club team.

WNCC will then host a six-game homestand in four days beginning Saturday against Lamar Community College. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 1 p.m. at Cleveland Field in Scottsbluff. The Cougars will then host Otero Junior College in a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at noon before playing McCook Community College in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, March 10. All six of the home contests are Region IX conference games.
