WNCC women win opening round game at regionals

(Miles City, MT) -- In the first game of the 2008 Region IX Women's Basketball tournament, Western Nebraska Community College defeated Eastern Wyoming College 88-61. WNCC will face Sheridan College, who was a 105-44 winner over Lamar Community College, in the second round on Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard on AM690 in the Scottsbluff area.

The WNCC Cougars were led by Chelsea Lyles with 17 points, hitting 6 of 7 from the floor. Joining Lyles in double figures for the Cougars were Shaquilah Davis (15), Emma Beddome (13) and Tawny Drexler (10).

After six lead changes and two ties in the first 13 minutes, Western Nebraska begin to take control of the game as they went into the break with seven point lead at 43-36.

The second half was the same for Western Nebraska as they outscored the Lancers 43-25 in the final 20 minutes.
Western Nebraska outrebounded Eastern 41-25, including a 15-9 edge on the offensive rebounds. Davis for WNCC had a game-high seven rebounds.

Even though Eastern Wyoming College lost by 27, definitely a stronger performance than when these two teams met earlier in the season. WNCC coming out on top of the first matchup 83-38.

EWC was led by Stacie Folker's 31 point. Folker hit 7 of 9 from behind the arc and 11 of 16 from the floor. Jaqi Bell and Skye Smith were also in double figures for EWC with 12 and 10 respectively.
