WNCC baseball team drops two games to Trinidad on April 1


                TRINIDAD, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team put up some offensive numbers in Sunday’s doubleheader against Trinidad State Junior College, scoring 19 runs in two games.
                Unfortunately for the Cougars, the Trojans also racked up the runs, tallying 34 totals runs as Trinidad State swept an Empire Conference doubleheader 12-9 and 22-10 on Sunday in Trinidad, Colo. The Trojans swept the four-game series against the Cougars, outscoring WNCC 60-25.
                The losses moved the Cougars to 6-8 in conference play just a game ahead of Trinidad, who is sitting in fifth with a 4-8 mark. The top four teams in the conference race qualify for the regional tournament.
                Sunday’s losses had plenty of offensive firepower as both teams combined for 52 hits. WNCC took a quick 1-0 lead in the first game as Max Brennen led off by reaching on an error and later scoring on a single by Nick Vanthillo.
                Trinidad came back to take a 4-1 lead after one complete innings, and then took a 6-1 lead after three innings.
                The Cougars battled back, scoring four times in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to go ahead 8-7. WNCC scored their four runs in the fourth on four hits. Pep Gonzalez started things with a double followed by a single by Keeton Krause to score Gonzalez. After a walk and a dropped third strike, Brennen singled to score Josh Bride and then Jake Vore doubled to score Andy Padron.
                WNCC’s three fifth-inning runs all came with two outs. Benly Ramos started things by drawing a walk. Then, with two outs, Trevor Kriesel singled followed by Bride walking to load the bases. Oscar Familia then doubled to score all three runs.
                Trinidad came back in the bottom of the fifth with three runs of their own to take a 10-8 lead and then added two in the sixth.
                WNCC pounded out 12 hits in the contest. Brennen, Vanthillo and Gonzalez all had two hits. Familia led the way with three RBIs with a double. Gonzalez finished with two doubles, while Vore also had a double and two RBIs.
                Terry McNabb took the loss, going just one inning in relief of starting pitcher Gianfranco Bernal. McNabb gave up five runs on seven hits and one home run. Bernal went four innings, n giving up nine hits, seven runs and four home runs. Tre Meier finished off the contest by going one inning and striking out two.
                The second game was all Trinidad as the Trojans scored three runs each in the first and second inning. WNCC finally cracked the scoreboard with a single run in the third after vanthillo scored on a Gonzalez sacrifice fly.
                Any hope of a comeback was diminished in the bottom of the inning when Trinidad sent 17 batters to the plate in scoring 13 runs on 11 hits to take a 19-1 lead.
                WNCC’s only recourse was to make a last-inning rally and they almost did, scoring eight runs in the fifth inning. The Cougars’ first four batters all drew walks. The Cougars only had two hits in the inning, a run-scoring single by Ernesto Punales and a 3-run home run to centerfield by Pablo Garcia.
                WNCC finished the game with just seven hits. Ramos and Punales each went 2-for-2. Punales had two RBIs, while Ramos had a double. Garcia finished with a 1-for-2 game with three RBIs and a home run. The only other extra base hit was from Tyler Weins.
                Nick Hernandez took the loss on the mound, going two innings in giving up 11 runs on seven hits, while walking six and striking out two. Kriesel finished off the game, going two innings in allowing 11 runs on 10 hits, walking two and striking out one.
                WNCC will be back in action on Friday and Saturday when they face conference-leading Northeastern Junior College in conference doubleheaders in Sterling, Colo.
