TRINIDAD, Colo. — The Western Nebraska Community College baseball team dropped its fourth-straight contest after Trinidad State racked up 26 runs in two games to take an Empire Conference doubleheader on Saturday in Trinidad, Colo.
The Cougars fell 11-1 in the first contest and saw Trinidad score nine runs in the second inning to defeat the Cougars 15-5 in the second game.
In the opener, Trinidad scored three runs in the first inning before WNCC sliced the lead to 3-1 with a single run in the third. Trinidad came back and scored eight runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning to end the game via the 10-run rule.
Jeff Schmitt suffered the loss on the mound after going four innings and giving up eight hits, five runs and striking out one.
Offensively, WNCC had just six hits compared to 14 for Trinidad. Leading the Cougars offensively was Nick Vanthillo, who had the only RBI while Andy Padron had the only run scored for the Cougars.
The second game wasn’t much better for the Cougars on the scoreboard. They did, however, finish with seven hits, including three extra base hits. Trevor Kriesel and Josh Bride each recorded doubles, while Keeton Krause had had home run in the contest.
Krause’s home run came in the fourth with a one-out solo shot. Following Krause’s home run, Kriesel hit a double and scored on a Max Brennen single.
Terry McNabb took the loss on the mound, going just 1 2/3 innings in allowing 10 runs on seven hits. Chris Nadon and Challis Wright also saw action. Nadon went 2 1/3 innings in striking out two and allowing five runs on five hits, while Wright went 1/3 of an inning in allowing a hit and striking out one.
WNCC and Trinidad will play another doubleheader on Sunday before the Cougars face Luna Community College in a doubleheader on Monday in Las Vegas, Nev.
