WNCC men dominate Colorado Northwestern

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball team put three players in double figures as they opened the Air Force Prep tournament in dominating fashion with a 97-44 win over Colorado Northwestern Community College Thursday afternoon.

The Cougars held a 53-16 lead at halftime and never were threatened in the contest.

WNCC head coach Russ Beck said his team came ready to play.

“We told them we want to come out and show them we are a defensive team,” he said. “There is a lot of opportunity with this team to put a lot of pressure on and get stops. We were aggressive defensively, hungry and after stops.”

The Cougars had 11 players hit the scoring column and finished with five 3-pointers as a team. Sophomore Geddes Robinson paced all scorers with 23 points. Scott Bamforth finished with 18 points and three 3-pointers, while Francisco Cruz had 11 points and one 3-pointer.

Al-Akeem Watson and Jasen Williams finished with nine points each. Williams had the other trey for the Cougars.

The Cougars, 2-1, will face Buckley Air Force Base Friday before taking on Peterson Air Force Base on Saturday. Beck knows these two contests will be more physical.

“It will be a physical game with guys that understand how to play. There will be former Division I basketball players playing,” he said. “We trying to approach the games like it is a tournament and win day at a time.”
