COLUMBUS -- The Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team continue to roll along after picking up three wins at the Raider Invite in Columbus Friday.
The Cougar women, who ran their unbeaten streak to 32 matches in a row dating back to last season, did not drop a game in earning wins over Casper College 25-11, 25-13; Cloud County Community College 25-6, 25-12; and Central Community College-Columbus 25-23, 25-17.
The Cougar women will have one more pool play contest today, against Iowa Western Community College at 7:30 a.m. IWCC entered the tournament unbeaten and fell to Butler County Community College in three games.
Assistant coach Nicole Gonzalez said they played well Friday, however, they will need to keep serving well today to claim another tournament title.
“We will definitely need to play our game and make sure we serve well,” Gonzales said. “A lot of times when we start losing is because we are not serving well. We are a good enough team in blocking, hitting and other areas, but if we start missing our serves, the other team starts getting points. If we serve well, we will be O.K.”
In the opening match against Casper, Fatima Balza paced the team with nine kills and five blocks. Kaleinani Kabalis finished with nine points, five digs, three aces and three kills, followed by Paulina Piegza with three kills; Sabina Piegza with 15 set assists; Gregner Quinones with seven points; Brooke Blomenkamp with six points; and Nayka Benitez with five digs.
Against Cloud County, Balza had 10 points and seven kills, while Sabina Piegza had six kills and 22 set assists. Also for WNCC, Quinones had eight digs and eight points; and Benitez had three aces and seven points.
